Magic Bullet Denoiser 1.0.1
By Andrew Cheyne
Published on Friday, January 28th, 2011

It brings me a lot of pleasure to bring you a much-anticipated maintenance release for Magic Bullet Denoiser.

Announcing Magic Bullet Denoiser 1.0.1 : http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-denoiser/updates/ , fixing the following issues:

In Final Cut Pro:

  • When rendering a clip with Denoiser applied – canceling and then resuming the render causes the canceled frame to be black with blue specs in it. This can also cause blue frames in other areas of the output.
  • Fix an issue where you often get an “Unable to sample” error while using Denoiser.
  • When Denoiser is applied, it sometimes scrambles the output video.

In After Effects:

  • Denoiser can cause After Effects to crash while scrubbing the timeline and using Denoiser’s sliders at the same time.

As always, you can find updates for all of our products here: http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/downloads/updates/

07 – Color Correcting Food with Magic Bullet Colorista II

Recently, Stu Maschwitz sat down with a friend who wanted to learn about color and why his 7D stills look so much nicer than his video.  He had some 7D stills and video from a food prep shoot.

Stu helped him match the video to the stills and used almost every feature of CII.

Here is the Original footage, followed by the final result:

Mick Jones Brings Color to Wrangler’s “Road Trip” with Magic Bullet Colorista II
By Aharon Rabinowitz
Published on Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

I was scanning twitter over the weekend and caught a tweet from Director/Editor Mick Jones about a project he just completed for Wrangler, in which he used Magic Bullet Colorista II. The spot is about to be released as a part of a web campaign for Wrangler Asia-Pacific. It will be in conjunction with the “Worn Across America” print campaign. Here’s the video:

This was such an amazing piece that we asked Mick to send us some still frames from the edit so we could see the before and afters:

Wrangler Scrn Grab 1

Wrangler Scrn Grab 2

Wrangler Scrn Grab 3

Wrangler Scrn Grab 4

About why he uses Colorista II, Mick says:

I use Magic Bullet Colorista because I like to do my color correction within the editing system that I use, Final Cut Pro. Due to the nature of commercials and music videos, the picture edit changes quite a bit throughout the evolution of the spot, and often at the last minute. So rather than round tripping projects to external software for my Color Correction, I keep it in the edit and can respond to the changes quickly. Colorista II has some really powerful controls such as the keyer and selective color correction that I use a lot. The density and exposure controls are great for primary level correction and having a secondary level of control within the one filter is great. I also often “Stack” multiple Colorista filters to build a look. So, having precision professional controls and being able to stay within my edit sequence means I use Colorista on a daily basis in my line of work.

About the project, Mick had this to say:

For this piece I got to work with the legendary photographer Christopher Ferguson. For this collaborative piece we really wanted to capture the feeling of the great American road trip. Shot on the Canon 5DMkII with mostly a Zeiss 50mm 1.4 this was an exercise in seizing the moment. It was shot in conjunction with a still photo shoot that Chris was handling and the live action moments were often stolen as the shutter from his camera stopped firing. This stills and video collaboration definitely had it’s challenges, but I managed to build a good rapport with the models and was able to direct them through some live action sequences in order to get the shots that I needed for the edit.

This was such a fast paced shoot and the only gear I had was a Zacuto Z-finder 3x with pro anti fog and a Zacuto Target Shooter. The anti fog eyepiece was an absolute gem working in very humid conditions for this shoot...

The music went through a few variations before landing on this fantastic track from The SnowDroppers called “Do The Stomp”.

Check out Mick’s company, Litup Digital HERE, and his Vimeo page HERE.

As a side note, outside of the beta team, Mick’s was the first professional work we ever saw done in Magic Bullet Colorista II. This music video which came out just a few days after Colorista II’s release, is almost definately the first ever graded with Magic Bullet Colorista II:

Harry Frank’s Motion Design Class at fxphd
By Aharon Rabinowitz
Published on Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Hey folks – our very own Harry frank is giving a class this semester at fxphd. Join the class before it’s too late! Here’s the info:

awards

We’re excited to have a new After Effects course lead by a familiar name in the motion graphics industry, designer Harry Frank. This practical, software-based course will focus on creating a professional broadcast graphics package from scratch. Harry has done numerous high-profile national broadcast packages over the year for networks such as NBC, ABC, Fox, and G4TV. One of the strengths of After Effects is its plug in architecture and offerings such as Trapcode Particular, Form, and Lux are workhorses of mograph artists. Over the ten weeks, After Effects will be at the center of the course in conjunction with these and other plug ins from Red Giant Software.

In the broadcast industry, turn-around times for deliverables can be short, which makes efficiency a key component of being a professional motion designer. We need to have the right tools at our fingertips with an in-depth understanding of them to achieve this. This will be the core focus of this course: accelerating your creativity with your tools.

In AFX213, students will be building a graphics package for a broadcast awards ceremony. We will build assets such as a short show open, logo animation, full screen graphic, lower third, and transitional elements. This class will give students the opportunity to be creative, building a graphics package from scratch. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this experience with peer and instructor review in a special work sharing forum on the site. Members have found this level of interaction to be extremely valueable part of the course.

Harry originally studied music engineering and worked in both audio post-production and studio engineering, before entering the motion graphics field 12 years ago. He has worked in Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles as a freelance motion designer, with clients such as, Blur Studio, Digital Kitchen, and many more. As an instructor and author, he has authored numerous tutorials and training titles on motion design, After Effects Expressions, Trapcode Particular and Form, and Cinema 4D. In Detroit, he was an Adjunct Faculty at the College for Creative Studies. Harry is the owner of graymachine.com, and host of the networking site, themotionexchange.com

As you can see from the quotes below, people are excited about the class, so get in now before it’s too late!

“My name is Juan and I am very excited about this class, I saw some of Harry’s works on his website and on the RED Giant site and it is amaizing the kind of things and how professional Harry is. Like to get to that level and also know it is years of experience that provide that level, so I am working hard to learn the most I can.”

“I have been working with AF for about 3 years now and I am looking to get to a bit more to the advance level, but still a long road before I can switch my beginer to intermediate-advance level. I love working with AF and learn from such a profesional expert voice. Hope to learn a lot here. Thank you.”

“Hey Harry – psyched that you’re here and for this class! Love what I’ve seen so far!”

Trapcode Particular 2.1.1 Goodness
By Andrew Cheyne
Published on Tuesday, January 18th, 2011
Red Giant’s Quality Assurance, Support, and Engineering departments are constantly reviewing, analyzing, and fixing bugs – it is the things we spend the most time on in order to keep product quality a top priority. At the end of all that reviewing, analyzing, and fixing bugs, we end up releasing a large number of maintenance releases across all of our products and we’re usually pretty quiet about it… until now! We want to make sure you know when these bug fix releases are ready – look for news of these releases in the newsletter, on the blog, and on Twitter.

We’re also working on ways to make updating even easier – more to come on that!

This may be our first announcement of a maintenance release here on the blog, but there are many updates available on our product update website here: http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/downloads/updates/ – you will always find the latest maintenance releases for our products here – and maintenance release updates are always free!

To kick things off in shouting out about these releases, we have a free Trapcode Particular 2.1.1 update to make your product run even smoother. This new update fixes the following issues:
  • In After Effects CS5, if the particle life for the main particle was set to 0, After Effects would shut down.
  • In After Effects CS5, CS4, and CS3, if you were using a custom particle with loop time sampling for the texture, and attempted to copy and paste either the layer with Particular applied or the instance of Particular, After Effects would shut down.
  • If particles were emitted in a dense grid so they barely overlapped at the edges and were not animated, there were Moire patterns if the camera was rotated around the particles. This has been fixed in After Effects CS5, CS4, and CS3.

Enjoy!
