Catalog Panel

The Catalog panel is where your clips are shown organized in folders and playlists. This panel is found in Import, Organize and Export, and shows the same organization across all views. Learn about catalogs

Catalog panel in Import

In Import view, the Catalog panel shows a preview of how your media will be imported into the catalog.

Using folders. You can create new folders with the Add Folder button, rename existing folders, reorganize the folders, and remove folders from the catalog. When a folder is selected in the Catalog panel, it has been chosen as the import location in your catalog. To change the import location, select a different folder or create a new one.

Using playlists. The Catalog panel displays playlists in Import view, but they aren’t selectable here.

Import Options. The Catalog panel is affected by the options set for import. The Import options decides whether folders are imported along with the media, and this setting may display a ghosting of folders in the Catalog panel. The Folder Path option adds date/time-stamped folders, which also preview in the Catalog panel.

Catalog panel in Organize

Folders. Your media is organized by folders. You can retain the organizational structure you created when importing your media or you can change the organization by creating new folders with the Add Folder button, renaming existing folders, reorganizing your media in the folders, or by removing folders from the catalog. Just keep in mind what you do in the Catalog panel will be reflected on disk.

Playlists. You can create new playlists with the Add Playlist button, rename existing playlists, and delete playlists. One way to think about using playlists is for organizing clips with similar characteristics, groups for exporting or groups for common color corrections.

Some ways to organize are:

  • Move a clip between folders by dragging it from the Thumbnails, and dropping it onto another folder or playlist.
  • Copy a clip between folders by Option-dragging. This will create a duplicate of the clip.
  • Create a playlist that save an ordered list of clips, which you can play as a sequence in Review or Refine views. This is great for previewing a rough cut.

Catalog panel in Export

In Export view, the Catalog panel is where you select the clips, folders or playlists that will be exported.

Using folders. You can create new folders with the Add Folder button, rename existing folders, reorganize the folders, and remove folders from the catalog. When a folder is selected in the Catalog panel, its clips are selected for export.

Using playlists. You can create new playlists with the Add Playlist button, rename existing playlists, and delete playlists. When a playlist is selected in the Catalog panel, its clips are selected for export.
